What Qualifications Do I Need To Be A Personal Trainer?

Do you enjoy hitting the gym every day and would love to make a living teaching others how to get into shape?

The health and fitness space is thriving in Australia, and there has never been a better time to become a personal trainer. In fact, a recent report revealed that employment levels in the fitness industry went from 61,000 in 2020 to 104,000 in 2021, bouncing back close to pre-pandemic levels and that the personal training space is expected to grow 8.5% over the next five years.

This can be explained by the fact that 67% of adults are overweight or obese and that the pandemic has prompted many to rethink their priorities and place their health and wellness goals on top of their list. And naturally, as more and more people are becoming health conscious, personal trainers are in high demand.

So, to help you get started and turn your dream into a reality, here’s a short guide to becoming a personal trainer in Australia.

What Does A Personal Trainer Do?

A personal trainer helps clients identify their fitness goals and designs a tailored exercise program to help them reach their objectives.

While personal training is about ensuring your exercises are done properly, and the equipment is used safely, it’s also about educating you about health and fitness in general and providing you with emotional support. A personal trainer is here to motivate you to keep going and ensure you’re in the right mindset to reach your goals.

More specifically, personal trainers’ responsibilities include:

  • Assessing clients’ physical health, abilities and goals and designing exercise programs accordingly
  • Demonstrating exercises
  • Helping clients minimise risk of injury
  • Promoting health and fitness
  • Tracking progress
  • Providing general information about health and fitness

What Qualifications Do Personal Trainers Need?

To become a personal trainer in Australia, you’ll need valid qualifications.

You’ll also learn anatomy and physiology fundamentals and the latest health and fitness trends.

There are no entry requirements to access this qualification.

SIS40215 Certificate IV In Fitness

This certificate will allow you to build on what you learned during your certificate III and train clients one-on-one, whether for an employer or your own business. During this course, you’ll further your knowledge in the fitness and nutrition space. And you’ll also learn how to collaborate with other health professionals to design the best exercise programs for your clients and how to plan, manage and market your own business.

As a personal trainer, you’ll be able to work in different environments, including:
