What Qualifications Do I Need To Be A Gardener In Australia?

Working as a gardener in Australia can be a rewarding experience. You get to spend most of your time outdoors and get to work with your hands. People who aspire to work as a gardener may be curious about what qualifications are needed to get started in this profession.

What It Takes To Be A Gardener

Gardening is relatively simple compared to most other trades. Most people can get started immediately working as a gardener with very little education. Here are the basic qualifications needed to get started on your gardening career.

  • Physical Shape - During the day, you will spend a lot of time bending, squatting, and lifting objects. For some people, this work can be physically demanding. However, anyone in reasonable physical shape should be able to handle this type of work. This job is also a great way to stay in great physical health.
  • Training And Certification - There are no formal certifications or training required to become a gardener or to perform most gardening tasks. If you have experience caring for trees and plants, you can get started right away. If you don’t have experience, there are some certifications that can give you the knowledge you need. The most common course is Certificate III in Horticulture. There are other courses available including landscape construction, parks and gardens, and permaculture depending on the type of gardening you want to perform.
  • Licensing - Most gardening work doesn’t require any form of licensing. However, it’s important to check with your local municipality to ensure you aren’t performing work illegally. Some states and territories may require a license to work on things like irrigation.
  • Business Skills - Many gardeners choose to start their own business rather than work for an employer. While this does give you the flexibility to create your own schedule and work on the projects you enjoy the most, you will need some basic business skills to get started.
  • People Skills - As a gardener, you’ll spend a lot of time interacting with various customers. It’s important to have strong communication and people skills to build relationships, sell your services, and mitigate challenges.
