How To Start A Gardening Business

People who love spending time outdoors and working with their hands may enjoy gardening. Since not everyone has the time or knowledge to properly care for their plants and trees,  gardening can be a great business opportunity. Across Australia, there are over 13,000 gardening service businesses. If this sounds exciting to you, you may want to start your own gardening business.

What It Takes To Start A Gardening Business

Starting a gardening business is one of the easiest businesses to start. Gardening requires little to no training, has low start-up costs, and has a simple business model. Here are some basic steps to get you started on your journey to becoming a gardening business owner.

  • Training And Certification - The great news is that there is no official certification required to become a gardener in Australia. If you are familiar with caring for plants and trees, you can get started right away. However, if you don’t have much experience, there are a handful of certifications that can get you the knowledge you need. The most basic one is Certificate III in Horticulture. There are also courses available for landscape construction, parks and gardens, and permaculture.
  • Write A Business Plan - A business plan is an important part of the planning process. This document can be used to guide you through the start-up process and management of your business. A good business plan will include what services you will offer, a profile of your ideal client, and goals for expanding in the future.
  • Purchase Tools - Most gardening businesses can be started with as little as $2,000. Most of this money will go toward purchasing the tools and equipment you need. Start with basic tools such as shovels, rakes, pruning shears, garden hoses, gloves, and a wheelbarrow. You can always purchase more tools later.
  • Set Up The Business - You will need to register your business. Each city, state, and territory has different rules and regulations. At a minimum, you will need to secure an ABN (Australian Business Number) to use for tax purposes. Here are a few other things you need to consider when starting a new business.
  • Find Clients - To be successful, you have to find and sell your services to customers. This will be the most challenging part of starting a gardening business. It’s best to start by offering your services to friends and family. This is a great way to get your first clients and get hands-on experience. If they are happy with your work, they can refer you to their friends, family, and colleagues. Also, make sure you have a listing in popular online business directories like Google and Yelp.
