For most plumbing work, a standard plumbing license is sufficient. However, the requirements across the country may vary so plumbers should be knowledgeable about the rules in their state or territory. In some cases, the value of the work will dictate that a builder’s license is required. For example, NSW requires a builder’s license for any work that exceeds $5,000 in labour and materials. Obtaining A Builder’s License

If you do need a builder’s license, most plumbers can obtain it by meeting the requirements in the local jurisdiction. It’s common for qualified tradesmen to go on to become builders, but this isn’t usually a requirement. Additional training will be required for the plumber to meet the qualifications to apply for and obtain their builder’s license.

• Step 1: Safety Training - Most plumbers who regularly work on construction sites will already have their White Card. This card permits contractors to perform work on construction sites. If you don’t have this, you can complete a 6-hour safety course (Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry).
• Step 2: Additional Education - Most states and territories require aspiring builders to complete Certificate IV in Building and Construction. Other courses beyond this training may be needed depending on the state or type of construction work being done.
• Step 3: Obtain Work Experience - Applicants for a builder’s license must demonstrate that they have hands-on work experience performed under the supervision of a qualified builder. Some states require as little as two years of experience while others may want to see a minimum of 7 years of experience.
• Step 4: Review And Licensing - If you meet all the qualifications, you can apply for your license through the appropriate government agency. Additional steps like a police check or validating a minimum financial backing (often a minimum of $10,000) may be required.
