Does A Carpenter Need A Builders License?

Across Australia, thousands of carpenters are hard at work constructing buildings, cabinetry, and other wooden structures. As a part of the construction industry, carpentry is highly regulated. Carpenters must understand when it's appropriate to obtain a builder’s license to avoid any penalties or fines.

Does A Carpenter Need A Builder’s License?

Carpenters need to be knowledgeable about the licensing requirements for their area and specific type of work. These requirements can vary across Australia. The penalties can be steep for people and businesses that complete work that requires a builder’s license. In some areas, the fine can be up to $250,000 or a year in prison.

Generally, there are two aspects that determine whether a builder’s license is required — type of carpentry and value of the work. Each state and territory has its own requirements. For example, NSW requires a builder’s license for any work that exceeds $5,000 in labour and materials. This threshold in Victoria doesn’t start until a value of $10,000 is reached. These rules can change from time to time, so be sure the check with your local council for the latest guidelines.

Obtaining a Builder’s License

The process to obtain a builder’s license also varies by location and jurisdiction. While many builders are qualified tradesmen, this is not usually a requirement. A carpenter who wants to obtain a builder’s license will need to complete some additional training and meet the requirements to apply for and obtain their license.

  • Step 1: Safety Training - Aspiring builders will need to complete a construction safety course. Course CPCCWHS1001, titled Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry, is required for anyone entering a construction zone (commonly referred to as a White Card). In many cases, carpenters have already completed this course.
  • Step 2: Additional Education - Each state and territory has its own criteria but builders generally are expected to complete Certificate IV in Building and Construction. Other courses beyond this may be required depending on the location or type of construction work.
  • Step 3: Obtain Work Experience - Most areas require builders to have between 2 to 7 years of experience working under the supervision of an experienced builder. This experience is often gained through an apprenticeship.
  • Step 4: Review and Licensing - Once you meet all of the requirements to apply for a builder’s license, you will need to apply with the appropriate governing body. There may be additional steps in the process including having sufficient financial backing or a police check.
