Can A Plumber Get A Builder’s License?

Australia has strict rules around what trades and type of work requires a builder’s license. It’s important for plumbers to understand when a builder’s license is needed. If so, there are two options for completing the work — working under the supervision of a licensed builder or securing a builder’s license. In many cases, it may be easier for a plumber to simply get their own license.

Can A Plumber Get A Builder’s License?

It is possible for a plumber to get a builder’s license as long as they qualify for the requirements in their local jurisdiction. It’s important to note that most plumbing work is covered under a plumber’s standard license. Each state and territory has different rules, so it’s critical to know the licensing regulations. Sometimes, the value of the work is used as the determining factor between what does and doesn’t need a builder’s license. For example, NSW requires plumbers who are completing more than $5,000 of work (including labour and materials) to have their work signed off by a licensed builder.

Failure to comply with following contractor law could result in serious consequences. Depending on the type and number of violations, fines can reach up to $250,000 with serious offenders being sentenced to a year in prison.

How To Apply For A Builder’s License

Although plumbers are highly qualified in the work they perform, the requirements for obtaining a builder’s license are different. Plumbers won’t automatically qualify, but the process will be easier than someone who doesn’t have any trade experience. Generally, most states and territories have similar requirements, but there are some differences that could require additional training or steps in the process.

  • Step 1: Safety Training - Experienced plumbers likely already have their White Card. This card gives individuals permission to enter and work in construction zones. If you don’t already have a White Card, you can obtain it by taking a 6-hour construction safety course.
  • Step 2: Additional Education - In addition to your plumbing certification, obtaining a builder’s license also requires the completion of Certificate IV in Building and Construction. Check with your local municipality to see if any other training is required beyond this certification.
  • Step 3: Obtain Work Experience - Some states only require a couple of years of experience working under the supervision of a qualified builder. Others require up to 7 years of apprenticeship in the role. Check with the license issuer to see if your existing plumbing experience already meets the requirements of work experience.
  • Step 4: Review And Licensing - Once you meet all the requirements, you can apply for your builder’s license with the local governing body that oversees construction licensing. In addition to paperwork, some states and territories may request proof of financial resources (usually a minimum of $10,000 net worth) and a police check.
