Becoming a licensed painter requires a lot of work and dedication. In some cases, a building permit could be required for certain scopes of work. In those situations, the painter could work under the supervision of a licensed builder. While this works, painters may be better off getting their own builder’s license.
Most of the work that painters complete, is permitted without getting a builder’s license. By completing Certificate III in Painting and Decorating and an apprenticeship under another qualified, licensed painter, you can perform painting work in residential and commercial buildings. However, the laws and regulations in each state and territory can vary. In some cases, the value of the job dictates whether a builder’s license is required. For example, NSW requires plumbers who are completing more than $5,000 of work (including labour and materials) to have their work signed off by a licensed builder.
It’s important to understand the rules in the areas where you are performing work to avoid any fines or penalties. Violating contractor law can result in serious penalties and consequences. Depending on the severity and number of violations, fines can reach up to $250,000 or violators can be sentenced to a year in prison.
Painters do not automatically qualify for a builder’s license. Additional training and steps are required to obtain this license.
Painters are highly-qualified to perform the work that they are licensed to do. However, the requirements for obtaining a builder’s license are different and may vary by state or territory. Below are the basic steps required to apply for and secure a builder’s license. These rules may change from time to time, so be sure to check with the issuing body for the latest guidelines.
Some councils use licensing requirements to ensure that companies and individuals performing construction work across Australia are qualified. Despite being qualified, mistakes and errors can happen that could cause an injury or damage personal property. In this case, having liability insurance can protect you from the financial penalties of a lawsuit. At upcover, our goal is to help our clients find the protection they need.
