Becoming a licensed painter requires a lot of work and dedication. In some cases, a building permit could be required for certain scopes of work. Can A Painter Get A Builder’s License?
Most of the work that painters complete, is permitted without getting a builder’s license. By completing Certificate III in Painting and Decorating and an apprenticeship under another qualified, licensed painter, you can perform painting work in residential and commercial buildings. However, the laws and regulations in each state and territory can vary. In some cases, the value of the job dictates whether a builder’s license is required. For example, NSW requires plumbers who are completing more than $5,000 of work (including labour and materials) to have their work signed off by a licensed builder.

Depending on the severity and number of violations, fines can reach up to $250,000 or violators can be sentenced to a year in prison.

How To Apply For A Builder’s License
Painters are highly-qualified to perform the work that they are licensed to do. However, the requirements for obtaining a builder’s license are different and may vary by state or territory. Below are the basic steps required to apply for and secure a builder’s license. These rules may change from time to time, so be sure to check with the issuing body for the latest guidelines.
- Step 1: Safety Training - Painters who have experience working on construction sites likely already have their White Card. This gives individuals permission to enter and work in construction zones. Getting a White Card is easy. All you need is a 6-hour safety training course.
- Step 2: Additional Education - In addition to your painting certification, most states require the completion of Certificate IV in Building and Construction. This is the most basic educational requirement, but some areas have additional training requirements that must also be completed.
- Step 3: Obtain Work Experience - Painters will also need to demonstrate that they have a certain number of years of experience in the role of a builder’s apprentice. Generally, the experience required ranges from 2 years to 7 years. Before you pursue an apprenticeship, check with your local municipality to see if you existing work experience qualifies you for a builder’s permit.
- Step 4: Review and Licensing - Once you have met the training and work experience requirements, you can apply for your builder’s license with the local government body that oversees construction licensing. Some areas may require a police check or need validation of a certain level of financial resources (often a minimum of $10,000 net worth).
